MgSO4 is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. It is a white or grayish-white powder with a density of 2.66 kg/m3 and a melting point of 1124ºC. It is soluble in water, glycerin, and alcohol, slightly soluble in ether, and hygroscopic. When heated to 450ºC in air, it becomes basic magnesium sulfate. When heated to 1124ºC, it decomposes rapidly into Mg0, O2, SO2 and SO3. It can form 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 12 hydrates with water.
Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula MgSO4. It is a colorless orthorhombic crystal. It is soluble in water, ethanol and glycerol but insoluble in acetone. It is used in pharmaceuticals and printing and dyeing industries. It can also be used as a desiccant, feed, fertilizer or compound fertilizer. It is also the raw material for producing magnesium oxide.
